Codeine, Pt. IV

down the hatch

Usually people start telling you about the tailspin about now. The supposed moral dilemma of drug taking is big business, and we all like to hear about the hopeless cases: acts of humiliating depravity to fund it all in a spiralling whirlwind of addiction and shame, etc. etc. All doom and gloom. Not here. Here is where you’ll hear the pointless noise of mild drug addiction the way it really is; mostly fun and just a little bit annoying. You’re spared the patronising words of warning.

All I will say is that the turkey was about a week of me wondering what the point of life was without a dose of codeine to brighten the day. Some of us use coffee, I used codeine. Without coffee, some of us become irritable and confused. Without codeine I became confused and insane. I was fairly abnormal before all this anyway, but without my beloved package of 16 white pills the end seemed nigh, for a while at least. But when it’s gone it’s gone, and I didn’t try hard to solicit more, nor did I graduate with a masters in smack dabbling...
